Crests are the unique starter items that are selected at the beginning of each match. These items generally correspond to the role in which you are playing, as selecting the wrong type of crest will likely hinder your power later on in the match.
There are 7 unique crests in Predecessor, each providing a unique passive effect, and then evolving twice before being upgraded into one of three items with unique active and additional passive power.
